AHEAD Finalizes Purchase of Historic 12 King Square, Launching Major Downtown Revitalization Effort in Whitefield

AHEAD (Affordable Housing, Education and Development) has officially completed the purchase of 12 King Square in Whitefield, marking a major step toward restoring one of the community’s most recognizable historic properties. The real estate closing, finalized on March 13, 2026, paves the way for a transformational redevelopment effort set to strengthen downtown activity, expand affordable housing, and preserve a cherished local landmark. The long-vacant Shurtleff Pharmacy building, constructed around 1910 and known for the iconic ghost mural on its eastern wall, has stood for decades as a symbol of Whitefield’s downtown identity. After entering into an agreement with local investors in September 2023, AHEAD has committed to fully rehabilitating the property and returning it to active community use. “This building holds deep significance for the people of Whitefield,” said Larry Berg, Director of Real Estate Development at AHEAD. “Restoring it is about more than bricks and mortar—it’s about investing in the future of the town.” AHEAD’s redevelopment will transform the three-story structure into a vibrant mixed-use‑ building featuring: Ground-floor commercial space to support local businesses and stimulate downtown activity Four two-bedroom apartments on the upper floors At least three units designated as affordable for the next 20 years By blending new housing opportunities with commercial vitality, the project aims to serve both residents and entrepreneurs while boosting the town’s economic resilience. The redevelopment of 12 King Square represents a $3.4 million investment in Whitefield’s future. Construction is underway following a lengthy design, permitting, and predevelopment work. Funding support for the project is being provided by: Union Bank New Hampshire Community Development Finance Authority (CDFA) Northern Border Regional Commission (NBRC) BEA and InvestNH Union Bank These strategic public investments are helping ensure the historic structure can be preserved while delivering long-term community benefit. The revitalization of the Shurtleff building aligns with broader efforts to strengthen rural communities through targeted reinvestment in historic downtowns. By restoring an iconic property, adding needed housing, and supporting small-business activity, AHEAD’s project will serve as a model for how community-driven redevelopment can inspire broader economic resurgence. “When we reinvest in our small-town main streets, we strengthen the social and economic fabric of the entire region,” said Harrison Kanzler, Executive Director of AHEAD.
