Time for a Spending Reality Check!
Americans Saving Less, Spending More

For many people, the Great Recession provided a harsh reality check to stop spending recklessly and return to basic saving practices. During the height of the recession in May 2009, Americans were saving an average of 8.2 percent of their personal income, according to the U.S. Department of Commerce. But as of February 2011, average savings had slipped to 5.8 percent, while average spending increased for the eighth consecutive month.

"We’ve seen many families make drastic changes in their household spending habits, but many are tired of feeling pinched and are beginning to spend more freely" says Lori Wiggett, AHEAD’s HomeOwnership Center Director. "To prevent these families from falling into another financial crisis, consumers need to continue to watch where every penny goes."

AHEAD (Affordable Housing, Education and Development) is offering an opportunity to help local residents scrutinize their spending habits with a one-day workshop; “Express Money Makeover”. While typical financial education courses are primarily focused on providing information and worksheets, the “Express Money Makeover course teaches participants to change the behaviors that drive their financial decisions.

“Express Money Makeover” focuses on one main task: tracking expenses. “Our goal is to gets folks to realize that even the slightest change in their spending behaviors can have a significant positive effect on their finances and as a result, a quick turnaround to healthy household spending,” says Mary Jackson, AHEAD’s HomeOwnership Advisor.

If you're committed to taking financial control of your life, sign up to attend this one-day workshop.  The cost is $20 per household which includes all classroom materials, lunch and a free credit report.  Participants will also receive five weekly follow-up sessions to create their personal financial plan at no additional cost. The workshop will be held on Saturday, November 5th from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Whole Village Family Resource Center in Plymouth. Register now!
